About Monteverde
Monteverde is a small town located in northwestern part of Costa Rica, whose elevation is 1,400 feet. One of the first inhabitants were a group of Quaker families that came from Alabama, USA. They came to Monteverde in 1952 with a pacifist mentality wanting to leave behind the war of 1948.Ready to shape their destiny in a peaceful country.
A year later they founded the Monteverde Cheese Factory, renowned worldwide for its high quality products.
Currently the factory has high stringency in hygiene standards, the most advanced technology in materials and packaging machinery. Mainly, the facilitation for consumers has enabled us to contribute very successfully in feeding many families inside and outside the country.
We invite you to visit the cheese factory and drink a delicious smoothie or enjoy a delicious ice cream.
Monteverde presents a wealth of diverse flora and fauna, which is unique in the world, which has become a must-visit site. It is a place that has much to offer to nature lovers and scientists of various interests.
The Monteverde community is formed around the highest standards of protection and sustainable use of natural resources, agriculture and ecotourism. Located in the high mountains of the Cordillera de Tilarán, Santa Elena is the most important tourist center.
It is a rural town like any other you have ever seen before. The center has only a few blocks long, but every one has something lovely to offer. In addition to basic services such as supermarket, pharmacy and banks are small and cozy cafes, restaurants, bookstores and souvenir shops with unique items produced by local artists and artisans.

Climate
The climate of Monteverde is determined by the trade winds that come to Costa Rica loaded with humidity in the Northeast, traveling from the Caribbean to the Pacific. On the way, the winds cross the Cordillera of Tilarán acting as a barrier to the masses of humid air. These are cooled off on its climb over the mountains causing orographic rainfall and it passes on to the Pacific slope warming up as it descends.
The average annual temperature varies between 20C and 25 º C, and average annual rainfall is 3000 mm.
Flora
and Fauna
The Monteverde tropical cloud forest is one of the most famous destinations in the world and also one of the most protected areas of Costa Rica. Receives thousands of visitors looking to appreciate and study the biodiversity of its ecosystems.
This is a setting of adventure, appreciation and enjoyment of the environment. A room for surprise and ecstasy.
Its biodiversity includes more than: 400 species of birds including the Quetzal, the Calandria and Pavoncillo, 120 species of reptiles and amphibians, 490 butterflies, 100 mammals, and some like the tapir, the jaguar and ocelot are in danger of extinction.
2,500 plants, among which 420 are orchids that bloom mainly in March, 200 ferns. This diversity is distributed in an altitudinal Geography • ° Average 1,200 m from 660 m. on the slopes of the Caribbean to the 1860 m. on the tops of the mountains.
The natural (elfin) dwarf forests sculpted by the wind in the exposed hills above remain stunted, while gallery forests have majestic trees, decorated with orchids, bromeliads, ferns, vines and moss.
Imperfect drainage areas hold the swamp forests, while parts of the reserve, lectured by deep gorges, have numerous crystal clear streams with waterfalls
